A shy, music-loving fourteen-year-old boy named Daron Johnson lost his life in a tragic shooting in June of 2018. The young male had been attending a friend's birthday party at a Lions Club in Lawrence, an area just outside of Indianapolis, Indiana, when violence suddenly erupted. It was the first time his mother had allowed him to go to such a gathering, a decision that would end in unimaginable heartbreak.
As the Saturday night party was coming to a close, a fight broke out between two
individuals. The altercation quickly escalated, drawing in two larger groups and culminating in gunfire. In the ensuing chaos, Daron, an innocent bystander with no involvement in the dispute, was struck in the head by a stray bullet. Four other young people, with ages ranging from eleven to fourteen, also sustained injuries, though none were as severe as Daron's. He had just completed his seventh-grade year at Belzer Middle School.
Paramedics rushed Daron to a local children's hospital, but his injuries were catastrophic. Doctors soon declared him to be brain-dead, and the heartbreaking decision was made to remove him from life support. His family, shattered by the senseless act of violence, remembered him as a loving son and brother. In the wake of the shooting, Lawrence police made one arrest, taking a fourteen-year-old into custody. However, they strongly believed at least one other shooter was involved and pleaded with the community for any information that might lead to further arrests, seeking justice for the young life that had been so senselessly cut short.
