On February 25, 2019, the life of a 23-year-old Black / African American male named Ahlon Buggs was cut short in a violent incident in East Chicago, Indiana. Buggs, who was a resident of neighboring Gary, had been in the 3900 block of Pulaski Street that evening when he became the target of a shooting. The quiet of the winter night was shattered by gunfire, leaving the young man critically injured on the scene with multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency services responded to the location,
and Buggs was urgently transported to St. Catherine Hospital in hopes of saving his life. despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m. that same night. The Lake County Coroner’s Office subsequently examined the body and officially ruled the death a homicide, confirming that the fatal trauma was caused by the gunshot wounds he sustained during the attack on Pulaski Street.
In the wake of the shooting, local authorities launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading up to the murder and to identify those responsible. Despite these efforts, information regarding the perpetrator remained elusive. As of the last available public reports, law enforcement had not announced any arrests, nor had they publicly named any suspects in connection with the case. Friends and family gathered to mourn his passing weeks later, holding a funeral service for him on March 13, 2019, at the Greater Bible Church in East Chicago, while the search for justice in his death continued without a resolution.
