On a summer evening in Indianapolis, Indiana, a dispute over a piece of candy tragically escalated, leading to the death of 31-year-old Tony A. McClain Jr. The male victim was involved in a confrontation on June 25, 2019, with a homeowner, Steven Archie, who was selling snacks from a table in front of his residence on the near northwest side of the city.
The incident began when McClain purchased candy from Archie but was dissatisfied with his purchase.
After a brief exchange, during which McClain reportedly inquired about the gun Archie had holstered on his hip, McClain went to his Jeep. He returned and allegedly snatched a money bowl from Archie's table, taunting him with the name 'Candy man' as he fled back to his vehicle.
Archie pursued McClain and, as McClain’s Jeep accelerated toward him, Archie fired his weapon multiple times into the vehicle. The Jeep then crashed into another car, and McClain was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the incident, Steven Archie was arrested and charged with reckless homicide, a level 5 felony. He was held in the Marion County Jail without bond. During the investigation, it was revealed that Archie himself had called 911 to report the shooting, stating that someone had stolen his money and that he had shot at them.
