In the summer of 2019, a domestic situation turned fatal for 54-year-old Kevin Hayden, a Black male, in Gary, Indiana. On the evening of July 11th, police were dispatched to a residence in the 4000 block of West 10th Avenue after receiving a call from Hayden's ex-girlfriend. She reported that a shooting had occurred at the home where Hayden had been staying with her for a few days.
Upon their arrival at approximately 5:27 p.m., officers discovered Hayden suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead at 7:17 p.m. that same evening. The Lake County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Hayden, who had ties to Chicago Heights but whose address was listed in Gary, died as a result of the shooting.
At the scene of the incident, law enforcement took Hayden's 40-year-old ex-girlfriend into custody. A weapon was also recovered from the residence. While the woman was arrested, her name was not publicly released. Investigators reported that she was cooperating with the ongoing homicide investigation being conducted by the Lake/Gary Metro Homicide Unit. Authorities have continued to seek information from the public to piece together the events that led to Kevin Hayden's death.
