On a Saturday evening in Indianapolis, what began as an ordinary day turned tragic inside a Penn Station restaurant on Pendleton Pike. Seventeen-year-old Connor Jamal Turner, a senior at Lawrence Central High School, was inside the sandwich shop on August 10, 2019. Another young man, 18-year-old Jaylen Ryle, who had recently graduated from the same high school, entered the restaurant shortly after 5:30 p.m.
Security footage from inside the establishment captured the moments that
followed. After an exchange of words between the two, Ryle went to the counter to place his order. Turner then walked towards Ryle with his hands out and palms forward. When Turner was just a few feet away, Ryle drew a handgun and fired multiple shots. The shooting left Connor Turner critically injured, and he later died at a hospital. Ryle remained at the scene and was arrested, with the gun found in his car. It was noted that he had a valid lifetime permit to carry a firearm.
In the ensuing investigation, Jaylen Ryle claimed he acted in self-defense, telling Lawrence Police that two people inside the restaurant had threatened to kill him. Despite his plea, Ryle was charged with murder. The case eventually concluded in April 2022 when Ryle reached a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. As a result of the agreement, he faced a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
