In the late summer of 2020, the life of 37-year-old Daniel Morris Jr., a Black male from Indianapolis, was tragically cut short. On the morning of August 27, 2020, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of a deceased person and discovered Morris's body on Guion Road, near 38th Street. Medics arrived at the scene and officially pronounced him dead.
The Marion County Coroner's Office would later determine that his death was a homicide, caused by multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and pelvis.
The investigation into Morris's death revealed that he had not been heard from for several days. His family's last contact with him was on the morning of August 21, 2020, while he was at an apartment in the 6100 block of Beachview Drive. Detectives uncovered crucial evidence from video footage recorded on the morning he was last seen. The video showed three individuals arriving at the apartment around 2:30 a.m. A short time later, two men were seen carrying another man's body out of the apartment and placing it into a vehicle. This discovery provided a grim timeline for the final hours of Morris's life and set investigators on the path to find those responsible.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect, Ivy Nunn. Further details emerged suggesting a connection between Nunn and Morris's wife, with reports indicating that Nunn had been in communication with her in the days leading up to and following the murder, and had allegedly made threats towards her. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies proved fruitful when, on September 11, 2020, U.S. Marshals located and arrested Ivy Nunn in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Daniel Morris Jr.
After his arrest, Ivy Nunn faced the judicial process. In April 2023, following a three-day trial, a jury found him guilty of murder. The evidence presented during the trial painted a clear picture of his involvement in the death of Daniel Morris Jr. Subsequently, a judge sentenced Nunn to 63 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, bringing a measure of justice to the family of the victim and concluding the extensive investigation that spanned multiple states and involved the cooperation of several law enforcement agencies.
