On a Sunday evening in Gary, Indiana, 30-year-old David J. Shelton was working his shift as a pizza delivery driver for Luigi's Pizza. On November 24, 2019, he was dispatched to a residence in the 3700 block of West Washington Street, unaware that this delivery would be his last. When he arrived at the address, his life was tragically cut short when he was shot and killed.
The investigation into the senseless act of violence quickly pointed to an attempted robbery gone wrong.
Authorities discovered that the pizza order had been a setup, a lure to bring a delivery driver to the location. Investigators were able to trace the call back to a specific cell phone, which became a crucial piece of evidence in identifying those responsible for Mr. Shelton's death.
The trail led law enforcement to two young men from Gary, Terryante Flournoy, who was 21 at the time, and 20-year-old Ciontay Wright. The evidence suggested that Flournoy and Wright had placed the pizza order with the intent to rob the delivery driver. When David Shelton arrived, he was fatally shot during the course of the attempted robbery.
Following the investigation, both Terryante Flournoy and Ciontay Wright were taken into custody. Due to the nature of the crime, which involved an attempted robbery affecting interstate commerce, federal authorities took over the prosecution. A federal grand jury indicted both men on charges of attempted robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, and murder resulting from the use of a firearm during a crime of violence. Flournoy faced an additional charge for being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
