In the winter of 2020, the community of Kokomo, Indiana, was shaken by the tragic death of 16-year-old James Carl Gray Jr. Known affectionately as 'JJ' to his friends and family, he was a tenth-grade student at McKinley School. Gray was described as a vibrant young man with a passion for life; he played PAL football, enjoyed rapping with his friends, had a talent for drawing, and excelled at math.
He was known for his loyalty to his siblings and his ability to make others laugh with his jokes.
On the night of January 2, 2020, the promising young life of James Gray was cut short. He was shot on the northwest side of Kokomo and was quickly transported to St. Vincent Hospital by witnesses at the scene. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his gunshot wound shortly after his arrival. The Howard County Coroner's Office later confirmed that a gunshot wound was the cause of his death.
The investigation into Gray's death led to the apprehension of two suspects. One individual, a 15-year-old, was arrested in connection with a robbery related to the shooting incident. Additionally, an 18-year-old from Illinois named Jeremiah Neal was charged with murder and robbery in the case. The death of James Gray marked the second time in three weeks that a teenager in Kokomo had died as a result of gun violence, prompting calls from community leaders for an end to the senseless violence affecting the city's youth.
