On the evening of August 11, 2020, tragedy struck in Michigan City, Indiana, at the Pinetree Court apartment complex, also known as Garden Estates West. Darius Mitchell, a 27-year-old male, was fatally shot in what became the city's second homicide in just three days. At approximately 8:45 PM, the La Porte County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting multiple gunshots in the vicinity of the 900 block of Southwind Drive.
Upon their arrival, police officers encountered a
large crowd of about 50 people gathered in the area of building 13. They discovered Mitchell lying motionless on the ground. An officer immediately began administering life-saving measures until Emergency Medical Services arrived. Despite these efforts, Darius Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene. The Michigan City Police Department promptly launched a homicide investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
In the weeks that followed, a collaborative investigation involving the Michigan City Police Department, the Fugitive Apprehension Street Team, and the United States Marshals Services' Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force led to the identification of a suspect. On September 25, 2020, authorities located and arrested 19-year-old Demario Emmanuel Williams-Anderson near the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis. Investigators learned that Williams-Anderson had fled to Indianapolis following the shooting. He was taken into custody without incident and transported back to La Porte County.
Demario Williams-Anderson was subsequently charged with the murder of Darius Mitchell. He was held at the La Porte County Jail on a $1 million bond pending his initial hearing in La Porte Superior Court 1.
