In the autumn of 2020, the life of Ricky Lamar Kinds Jr., a 20-year-old male from South Bend, Indiana, was tragically cut short in what was described as a senseless act of violence. On the night of October 22, or in the early moments of October 23, 2020, Kinds and another young man, 21-year-old Malik Balderos, were shot and killed near the Waterford Glen Apartments in South Bend. Kinds, born on May 30, 2000, was a graduate of John Adams High School and was employed as a maintenance technician.
Those who knew him remember a young man with a contagious smile who loved his family deeply.
The double homicide prompted an investigation that led authorities to an Illinois man, Tyrik Rayford of Sauk Village. In March 2023, a jury found the 24-year-old Rayford guilty in connection with the deaths of Kinds and Balderos. His conviction included one count of murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder, along with a firearm enhancement.
Following his conviction, the judicial process moved to sentencing. Rayford was ordered to serve 75 years in prison for his role in the murders. The sentence was structured as 55 years for the murder charge and 30 years for conspiracy to commit murder, with those sentences to be served concurrently. An additional 20 years were added to be served consecutively due to the firearm enhancement, ensuring a lengthy period of incarceration for the man responsible for the deaths of the two young South Bend men.
