On October 25, 2020, the community of Griffith, Indiana, became the scene of a violent tragedy involving the death of 30-year-old Preston Billings, a Black / African American male originally from Chicago. Early that morning, around 5:00 a.m., an anonymous caller contacted authorities to report a person lying on the ground in a grassy area near an apartment complex.
Officers from the Griffith Police Department responded to the scene in the 1900 block of Park West Boulevard, where they discovered Billings’ body situated between the residential building and a parking lot.
Upon further examination, the Lake County Coroner’s Office determined that Billings had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, which were cited as the cause of his death. Investigators at the scene recovered spent shell casings and other unspecified evidence, but the specific details regarding these findings were not released to the public. The Griffith Police Department, working in conjunction with the Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force and the Indiana State Police, launched a homicide investigation to determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Despite the collaborative efforts of local and state law enforcement agencies, the motive behind the killing remained unclear in the aftermath of the incident. Detective Jim Sibley of the Griffith Police Department led the inquiry, urging anyone with knowledge of the events to come forward through anonymous tip lines. As the investigation progressed, no suspects were publicly identified, and authorities reported no arrests or significant breakthroughs in the case. The death of Preston Billings, sometimes referred to as Preston Billings IV, left his family and the community with unanswered questions as the search for those responsible continued without immediate resolution.
