In the early hours of November 25, 2020, the life of 26-year-old Micah Garrett, a Black male, was tragically cut short in his Michigan City, Indiana, home. Police responded to a 911 call around 2:30 a.m. on Fir Street to find Garrett deceased from a gunshot wound. From the outset, investigators believed the shooting was not a random act of violence.
The investigation into Garrett's death continued for over a year.
A significant breakthrough came in December 2021 when the Michigan City Police Department, in collaboration with the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, apprehended Demetrius Shorter-Farrow in Bloomington, Indiana. Shorter-Farrow, also a resident of Michigan City, was wanted on a LaPorte County warrant for murder in connection with Garrett's death.
Initially charged with murder, Shorter-Farrow later entered into a plea agreement in April 2023. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, a Level 2 felony. As part of the agreement, the original murder charge was dismissed. Subsequently, in June 2023, Demetrius Shorter-Farrow was sentenced to 17 and a half years in the Indiana Department of Correction for his role in the death of Micah Garrett.
