On a Saturday evening in Michigan City, Indiana, the life of 26-year-old Wade Hatcher was tragically cut short. On October 15, 2016, while driving eastbound on Michigan Boulevard, shots were fired from another moving vehicle, striking Hatcher. A citizen rushed him to the emergency room, but he succumbed to his injuries. Hatcher was a Black/African American male.
The Michigan City Police Department launched an immediate and intensive investigation into the shooting.
Within just six hours, investigators had identified several persons of interest and were conducting numerous interviews. The diligence of the department's Investigative Division, Street Crimes Unit, and Fugitive Apprehension Street Team, combined with information from the public, quickly pointed toward a suspect.
Two days after the fatal shooting, authorities filed charges against 28-year-old Kersee Anderson. He was charged with one count of murder and one count of being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm. The investigation continued as detectives worked to determine a motive for the shooting. Anderson was subsequently arrested and held on a one-million-dollar cash bond.
In 2020, Kersee Anderson was found guilty of the murder of Wade Hatcher. A key piece of evidence leading to his conviction was surveillance footage that linked him to the crime. The conviction brought a measure of closure to Hatcher's family and the Michigan City community, holding the perpetrator accountable for his violent actions.
