In the spring of 2021, the life of 59-year-old Joyce Ann Carwile was tragically cut short in her Fort Wayne, Indiana, home. On March 19, an altercation between Joyce and her husband, David Carwile, escalated to a fatal conclusion. The night before the shooting, Joyce had called 911 following an argument, a grim foreshadowing of the violence to come.
The following day, David Carwile, who was an antiques dealer, shot his wife.
He would later claim in court that he acted in self-defense, alleging that Joyce had thrown a knife at him. He testified that due to his multiple sclerosis, his hand shook as he drew the gun he kept nearby and shot her in the chest.
Following the shooting, David Carwile left the residence. About an hour later, a Fort Wayne police officer pulled him over. In a chilling exchange captured by the squad car's recording system, David expressed a complete lack of remorse, stating, 'Good, I hope she dies.' He then told the officer to take him downtown and lock him up.
An Allen County jury rejected David Carwile's self-defense claim and found him guilty of murder and the use of a firearm in his wife's death. The evidence presented during the trial, including his own words captured on the police recording, painted a damning picture. Ultimately, the 56-year-old was sentenced to 80 years in prison for the murder of his wife, Joyce Ann Carwile.
