In the spring of 2021, a tragedy unfolded in Indianapolis that cut short the life of Jasvinder Kaur, a 64-year-old woman of the Sikh faith. On the evening of April 15th, what began as a regular workday at a FedEx facility descended into chaos and violence. Kaur was one of eight people who lost their lives in a mass shooting that stunned the city and reverberated through its tight-knit Sikh community.
Jasvinder Kaur had immigrated to the United States from India just a few years prior to
the incident and commuted to her job at the warehouse with a relative, Amarjit Sekhon, who also perished in the attack. That particular Thursday night, she and Sekhon were arriving for their 11 p.m. shift when the gunman opened fire in the parking lot. The senseless act of violence that claimed her life also took the lives of seven other individuals, leaving families and a community to grapple with an immense and sudden loss. She was looking forward to celebrating her granddaughter's second birthday that coming Saturday and had planned to make her well-known homemade yogurt for the party.
The perpetrator of the mass shooting was identified as a 19-year-old former employee of the FedEx facility. According to law enforcement, he began firing indiscriminately at people in the parking lot before entering the building and continuing his deadly assault. After taking the lives of eight innocent people, the gunman then took his own life. The investigation that followed revealed that the shooter's mother had previously expressed concerns about his potential for violence.
