In the early morning hours of August 6, 2021, the life of 21-year-old Angelica Casares was tragically cut short in her East Chicago, Indiana, home. Responding to a ShotSpotter alert of gunfire around 5:45 a.m., police arrived at the residence on Fern Street to find a grim scene. The front window of the home was riddled with bullet holes, a prelude to the violence that had unfolded within.
Inside, officers discovered Angelica Casares in the living room, having sustained multiple gunshot
wounds. Next to her body, investigators found an AK-47-style rifle equipped with a drum magazine, along with numerous spent shell casings that littered the area.
