In the early morning hours of Tuesday, September 14, 2021, the life of 27-year-old Moneshia M. Edwards was tragically cut short in East Chicago, Indiana. At approximately 2:14 a.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the quiet of the 3900 block of Elm Street, prompting a police response to the area. A ShotSpotter notification indicated that two rounds had been fired.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a grim scene. Moneshia Edwards, a female resident of East Chicago, was found unresponsive, lying face down on the sidewalk in front of a residence. As police secured the area, they observed a vehicle attempting to leave the immediate vicinity. A traffic stop was conducted on this vehicle, leading to a significant discovery. Inside the car, officers found an AK-47 style rifle. The driver of the vehicle was promptly taken into custody and brought in for questioning by detectives.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene to render aid to Moneshia. She was swiftly transported to St. Catherine Hospital in an effort to save her life. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries. It was determined that she had sustained gunshot wounds to her chest and the right side of her back. The East Chicago Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division was called to the scene to take over the investigation into her death. Authorities have encouraged anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward and contact their detectives or leave an anonymous tip.
