In the early evening of January 2, 2025, what began as a transaction involving the sale of a firearm inside an Indianapolis home on Capsella Lane quickly spiraled into violence, leaving one man dead and two others critically injured. The deceased was identified as 29-year-old Sebastian Prayer Jones. The incident marked the city's first homicide of the new year.
According to police, a dispute erupted during the gun sale, escalating into a physical confrontation.
In the midst of the struggle, shots were fired. When Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived at the scene shortly before 9 p.m., they discovered three men suffering from gunshot wounds. Sebastian Jones was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two men were transported to local hospitals in critical condition. Two other individuals who were present at the time of the shooting managed to escape through a window and were reported to be cooperating with the investigation.
In the course of their investigation, detectives identified 21-year-old Hayden Dedrick as the suspected shooter. Investigators believe that a disturbance involving a firearm occurred between Jones and another person inside the residence. It is thought that Dedrick fired at Jones in an attempt to protect his friend, who was also injured in the shooting. Police also believe that Dedrick left the scene to get more ammunition before returning and firing additional shots, striking a third individual.
Following the incident, Hayden Dedrick was arrested and formally charged on February 17 with one count of attempted murder and one count of aggravated battery. However, after a review of the case, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office determined that the shooting of Sebastian Prayer Jones was a justifiable action in the defense of another.
