In the quiet town of Mount Vernon, Indiana, a grim discovery shattered the community's sense of peace. On the morning of November 6, 2021, a concerned family member entered the home of 74-year-old John Stephen Hall and his wife, Elizabeth Ann Hall, on Mulberry Street to check on their welfare after not hearing from them for a couple of days. Inside, they found a devastating scene: both John and Elizabeth were deceased.
The subsequent investigation by the Indiana State Police and Mount Vernon Police quickly determined that the couple had met with foul play, and their deaths were ruled a homicide. Both John, a White male, and his wife had suffered fatal gunshot wounds. John was discovered in an upstairs bedroom, while Elizabeth was found in a downstairs bedroom. Investigators noted signs of a home invasion, with forced entry indicated by a broken pane of glass on a back door. Several items were missing from the residence, including the couple's wallets and phones.
The investigation swiftly led to a suspect, 28-year-old Austin Kusturin of Mount Vernon. He was arrested just a few days after the discovery of the Halls' bodies. Crucial evidence linked Kusturin to the crime scene. His fingerprints were found on John Hall's phone, and a gun belonging to John Hall was discovered in a storage unit associated with Kusturin and his mother. Surveillance footage and witness statements also placed him near the Hall's home on the night of the murders.
