In a tragic turn of events on a Friday in Gary, Indiana, a young man's life was cut short. Jediah RayShaun Perry, a 21-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on November 12, 2021. The incident unfolded in front of Kelly's Soul Kitchen on 5th Avenue, stemming from a prearranged meeting that escalated into deadly violence.
The encounter involved another man, 25-year-old Rahmere Dunn of Whiting, Indiana. According to court records, Perry had arranged to buy marijuana from Dunn.
During the transaction inside Perry's vehicle, a confrontation erupted. The prosecution later argued that Dunn shot Perry five times, including once in the back of the head, an act they described as excessive and not indicative of self-defense.
Following the shooting, Dunn fled the scene, taking both his and Perry's firearms and deleting their Facebook messages in an attempt to conceal the nature of their meeting. However, the investigation led authorities to identify him as the primary suspect. He was subsequently arrested and charged with murder and a gun enhancement.
During the trial, Dunn claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Perry had attempted to rob him at gunpoint. His defense attorney argued for his client's innocence on these grounds. Conversely, the prosecution painted a picture of a drug deal gone wrong, culminating in an execution-style killing. The jury ultimately sided with the prosecution, finding Dunn guilty of murder. On May 3, 2024, he was sentenced to 60 years in prison—55 years for the murder and an additional five years for the gun enhancement. Despite the conviction, Dunn's defense maintained his innocence and planned to appeal the verdict.
