In the chill of a November evening in Indianapolis, the life of 24-year-old Isaiah Luckett, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On November 12, 2021, on the near west side of the city, in the vicinity of Neal Avenue and West Washington Street, gunshots echoed through the neighborhood just before 7 p.m. When officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived, they discovered Luckett's body in an alleyway.
Paramedics were called to the scene, but it was too late; he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
The Marion County Coroner's Office would later confirm his death as a homicide, another statistic in a year that saw a rising number of killings in the city. For those who knew him, the violence was incomprehensible. His grandmother, Effie Mays, who had raised him from the time he was a baby, described him as a loving and caring person who would go out of his way to help others. She tearfully recounted that he was not one to carry weapons and that he struggled with mental illness, making his violent end all the more senseless to his grieving family.
In the wake of the shooting, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department opened an investigation into Luckett's murder.
