On the north side of Indianapolis, a tragic story unfolded on the evening of December 1, 2021, culminating in the deaths of 21-year-old Andrew Jones and his companion, 20-year-old Blake Coffman. The two men were discovered in the 8800 block of Westfield Way with apparent gunshot wounds. Jones was found inside a car, while Coffman was lying on the ground nearby.
Both were rushed to local hospitals but succumbed to their injuries shortly after their arrival.
Investigators quickly pieced together the events leading to the fatal encounter, labeling it a drug deal that had taken a violent turn. A crucial piece of evidence came from Coffman's phone, where detectives found an Instagram conversation with an account they traced to a man named Camran Perry. This communication was the last one made from Coffman's phone before the shooting. This digital trail led the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department to identify Perry as a person of interest.
Upon being questioned by law enforcement, Perry admitted to arranging a meeting with Jones and Coffman with the intention of purchasing marijuana. He claimed that an argument broke out during the transaction. According to Perry's account, Jones threatened him with a firearm. Perry stated that he managed to disarm Jones and then shot both him and Coffman before escaping the scene. His confession provided a motive and a sequence of events for the investigators to work with.
Following Perry's arrest, the legal process moved forward. In July 2024, a jury found Camran Perry guilty on two counts of murder, as well as a charge of carrying a handgun without a license. The subsequent sentencing in August 2024 reflected the gravity of the crimes, with Perry receiving a 110-year prison sentence. The case brought to light the devastating consequences of gun violence and the illegal drug trade, leaving two young men dead and another facing a lifetime behind bars.
