Charletta Geneva Pritchett was a 34-year-old Black woman residing in Hammond, Indiana, who lost her life on January 23, 2022. Born in Princeton, Indiana, she worked as a quality control technician and was known for her outgoing personality and close relationship with her family. On the night of the incident, she was at her home in the 900 block of Bauer Street, which she shared with her boyfriend of ten years, Richard D. Jones Jr.
The couple became embroiled in a heated altercation that reportedly began after Jones became jealous over a comment a man had made on one of Pritchett's social media posts.
The argument escalated into a physical confrontation during the early morning hours. According to court documents, the dispute intensified when Pritchett brought up past allegations regarding a relative of Jones. At some point during the quarrel, a firearm was introduced into the situation. Jones later claimed that Pritchett was holding the gun and that it accidentally discharged while he was attempting to wrestle it away from her. However, investigators found evidence contradicting this account, including a second bullet hole in the dining room wall, which Jones eventually admitted he had fired out of anger.
Following the shooting, Jones contacted his mother rather than immediately dialing emergency services. He gathered his three children, who were present in the home during the violence, and left the premises. By the time authorities and medical personnel arrived at the residence around 3:15 a.m., Pritchett had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Police also noted she had sustained other injuries, including lacerations near her temple and wrist, as well as bruising on her arms, indicating a struggle had occurred before her death. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Richard Jones was initially arrested and charged with murder and domestic battery. During the investigation, he maintained that the shooting was accidental, but the forensic evidence and his behavior following the incident led prosecutors to pursue severe charges. The case proceeded through the legal system for two years before reaching a resolution without a trial.
In February 2024, Jones accepted a plea agreement with prosecutors. In exchange for the dismissal of the murder charge, he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, a Level 2 felony. A judge subsequently sentenced him to serve 28 years in the Indiana Department of Correction. The conclusion of the legal proceedings marked the end of the investigation into the domestic violence incident that resulted in Pritchett's untimely death.
