In the summer of 2022, the life of 31-year-old Raven Jazmine Clarice Washington was tragically cut short in Gary, Indiana. On Friday, July 29, 2022, she was found deceased in her car, which was parked behind an abandoned house on Roosevelt Street. The cause of her death was determined to be a gunshot wound to the head, and the case was immediately ruled a homicide.
Washington's family had reported her missing when she failed to return home from her job at a FedEx facility in Hammond.
The investigation into her death brought to light a history of domestic turmoil. Authorities identified Warren Curtis, a 27-year-old man from Gary, as a person of interest. Court records revealed a troubled and violent relationship between Curtis and Washington. In one instance, in June 2021, Curtis had allegedly held a gun to her head during an argument. Despite a restraining order Washington had filed against him, the two had reportedly resumed their relationship. Phone records indicated multiple calls between them on the day of her death, and witnesses attested to the often violent nature of their relationship, with Washington having expressed feeling trapped.
On November 2, 2022, Warren Curtis was arrested on an unrelated charge of unlawful carrying of a handgun. During questioning, he denied any involvement in Washington's murder, claiming he had not seen her since June and had only learned of her death through social media. However, the evidence, including phone records and witness statements, contradicted his claims. Subsequently, Warren Curtis was charged with the murder of Raven Washington. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence of 45 to 65 years in prison, with an additional 5 to 20 years for a firearms enhancement.
