In the autumn of 2022, the life of 32-year-old Calvin Leon Lawson Jr., a male, was tragically cut short in Indianapolis, Indiana. On the evening of Friday, October 14, a dispute over a sum of money, reportedly less than $100, escalated to fatal violence. The confrontation occurred in the 4500 block of East Washington Street, outside the Parkway Terrace apartments where Lawson resided.
Witnesses reported that Milton Porter, then 24, arrived at Lawson's apartment, calling for him to come
outside and fight. The argument was rooted in an accusation that Porter had stolen money from Lawson. When Lawson came out to face him, prepared for a physical altercation, he was met with deadly force. Porter produced a firearm and shot Lawson once in the neck. According to witness accounts, Porter attempted to fire a second shot but was deterred when Lawson's girlfriend emerged from the apartment.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to the scene and found Lawson with a critical gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died a few hours later. The investigation moved swiftly, aided by numerous witness testimonies that identified Milton Porter as the assailant. Within three days of the shooting, on October 17, 2022, police had located and arrested Porter.
Milton Porter was subsequently charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. After a two-day trial in December 2024, a jury found him guilty on both counts. In February 2025, Porter was sentenced to 65 years in prison for the murder of Calvin Leon Lawson Jr. Prosecutors highlighted the senselessness of the tragedy, noting that Lawson had been unarmed and willing to engage in a fistfight to resolve the conflict, only to be met with a fatal gunshot.
