In the quiet city of South Bend, Indiana, the life of 60-year-old Deborah Weist Lechtanski, a dedicated and compassionate nurse, came to a tragic and violent end. Known to her friends and colleagues as Debbie, she had spent over two decades caring for others at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, where she was well-regarded for her kindness and the strong bonds she formed with those she worked alongside.
Her life, however, was cut short on the morning of November 26, 2022, in a horrifying act of domestic violence.
On that Saturday morning, South Bend Police were dispatched to a residence on West Calvert Street following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene. Inside the home, three individuals had sustained gunshot wounds. Deborah Weist Lechtanski and her husband, Robert Lechtanski, were found deceased at the scene. A third person, a 25-year-old family friend named Giselle Montero, was also found with gunshot wounds but was alive and transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
The investigation conducted by the South Bend Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit swiftly pieced together the tragic events. Their findings revealed that Robert Lechtanski had shot his wife, Deborah, and their family friend, Giselle Montero, before turning the weapon on himself, taking his own life. Autopsies later confirmed the investigators' conclusions, officially ruling the incident a murder-suicide. As the perpetrator was also deceased, the investigation concluded that there were no outstanding suspects, and no arrests were to be made in the case.
The community was left to mourn the loss of Deborah, a woman remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and cherished friend. Her funeral services were held on December 3, 2022, where family, friends, and colleagues gathered to pay their final respects and celebrate the life of a woman who had dedicated so much of her own life to the well-being of others, only to have it so senselessly taken away.
