Thadeus E. Davis, who served as the Chief of Police in Smithfield, Virginia, tragically passed away on May 14, 1902, at the age of 39. His death was the result of an accidental gunshot wound. On the day of the incident, Chief Davis had just arrested a man wanted for murder in Isle of Wight County. While escorting the suspect to the jail, his gun fell from his pocket and discharged, striking him in the hip. Despite efforts to save him, the injury proved fatal.
