Dakota Matthew Gene Gordon, an 18-year-old from Smithfield, VA, tragically passed away on December 31, 2017, following complications from an emergency surgery. Dakota was shot in the stomach during an attempted armed robbery on December 29, 2017, in the parking lot of a Dollar General store in Smithfield. He was with a friend when the incident occurred. The friend was also assaulted but survived with minor injuries.
