On July 18, 2023, 22-year-old Smithfield resident Kyonne Deontrie Edwards was found deceased alongside his girlfriend, 21-year-old A'shoneya Williams, in their apartment at Jersey Park Apartments on Wrenn Road. Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds, leading the Smithfield Police Department to classify the incident as a double homicide.
