On a tragic day in Petersburg, Virginia, October 23, 1951, Virginia State Police Investigator Wallace Monroe Simpson, a 41-year-old male, lost his life in the line of duty. His death came during a tense standoff with an escaped patient from the nearby Central State Hospital.
The incident began when the patient, who had been part of a work crew on the hospital's farm, managed to escape. He then barricaded himself inside a home adjacent to the hospital property.
Law enforcement, including Investigator Simpson, responded to the scene. For several hours, a harrowing exchange of gunfire took place between the officers and the barricaded man.
In a courageous attempt to approach the front door of the residence, Investigator Simpson was tragically struck in the face by a shotgun blast. The confrontation continued until the suspect was ultimately shot and killed by return fire from the officers. The violent encounter also resulted in injuries to six other policemen.
The suspect, whose identity was not widely reported, was killed during the shootout, and therefore no arrests were made in connection with Investigator Simpson's death. The case was closed following the incident. Investigator Simpson was survived by his wife.
