On a tragic day in August of 2013, the life of 28-year-old Marcellous Dwan Land was cut short in a violent encounter on the streets of Petersburg, Virginia. A Black/African American male, Marcellous was driving his vehicle on East Washington Street, near the bustling interchange of Interstate 95's Exit 52, on August 19th when the unthinkable happened. Unseen assailants opened fire, striking Marcellous and causing his vehicle to lose control.
The car, now without a driver, careened off the roadway and crashed into a nearby hotel, a sudden and brutal end to a young life. The incident sent shockwaves through the local community, prompting an immediate and thorough investigation by the Petersburg police.
In the wake of the shooting, detectives worked diligently to piece together the events that led to the fatal attack. Their investigation led them to a suspect, another Petersburg resident named Marvin Massenburg II, who was 27 years old at the time. Massenburg was apprehended in the neighboring Chesterfield County, a significant breakthrough in a case that had left a family grieving and a community on edge. His arrest brought a sense of progress in the quest for justice for Marcellous and his loved ones.
Following his capture, Marvin Massenburg II faced a litany of serious charges related to the death of Marcellous Land.
