In the rugged terrain of Lee County's Big Hill area, a tense situation unfolded that would ultimately claim the life of Virginia State Trooper Warren Yokely Harless. The male trooper was assisting deputies with an arrest following an alarming incident where a man had confronted several hunters at gunpoint, stealing their rifles after they had come onto his property.
When law enforcement arrived at the man's home, he fled into the surrounding hills, initiating a standoff that would stretch for nearly twelve hours.
Throughout the prolonged standoff, the armed man fired shots at the assembled deputies and troopers. As the confrontation neared its end, the suspect made a move to flee back into his residence. It was during this critical moment that Trooper Harless was tragically shot. The suspect, a 60-year-old man, was also shot and wounded before being taken into custody by the authorities.
Following his arrest, the legal process determined that the suspect was insane. He was subsequently committed to Southwestern State Mental Hospital. He remained there until his death on March 20, 1994. Trooper Harless was survived by his three sons.
