In the summer of 1978, the community of Henrico, Virginia, was shaken by the sudden and tragic death of one of its own. Patrolman Barry Wayne Maham, a 32-year-old male officer with the Henrico County Police Department, lost his life in the line of duty, a testament to the unforeseen dangers that law enforcement officers face. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Maham had served on the police force for three years, having started as a communications officer before becoming a patrolman.
On the
morning of August 8, 1978, Patrolman Maham and his partner were dispatched to a residence in the 5400 block of Raleigh Road to respond to a domestic disturbance call. While the officers were on the front steps speaking with the female complainant, the situation escalated with shocking violence. The woman's husband abruptly swung the front door open and fired a shotgun, striking Maham in the torso at point-blank range.
The gunman then barricaded himself inside the home, leading to a tense standoff with police. As law enforcement worked to resolve the volatile situation, a fire broke out inside the residence. The suspect was ultimately apprehended after he emerged from the burning house and was taken into custody by the officers on the scene.
Following the incident, the suspect was arrested and charged with the murder of Patrolman Barry Maham. The community mourned the loss of the fallen officer, who was remembered for his dedication and service. He was survived by his wife and two children.
