In the spring of 2005, the life of 39-year-old former NFL player Michael A. 'Mike' Brim came to a violent and tragic end in Richmond, Virginia. The male athlete, who had once played cornerback for several professional football teams, was fatally shot on April 19, 2005, during a confrontation with a man named Gary Miles. The dispute, which reportedly stemmed from an argument over a woman, escalated into a fatal shootout.
The events leading to Brim's death began at the American Karate
Center where Miles was employed. Following a dispute, Brim followed Miles to a residence on Pineway Drive in South Richmond. An investigation by the Richmond police found that upon their arrival at the home, Brim initiated the gunfire, firing multiple shots at Miles and wounding him in the leg. In response to the assault, Miles, who was also armed, fired a single shot that struck Brim in the torso.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, where they found Michael Brim's body in the driveway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Gary Miles was transported to VCU Medical Center to be treated for his gunshot wound.
Following an investigation into the shooting, the Richmond commonwealth's attorney's office announced in August 2005 that Gary Miles would not face any criminal charges in the death of Michael Brim. The prosecutor's office concluded that Miles had acted in self-defense. They based their decision on evidence indicating that Brim had followed Miles and had been the first to open fire. The determination was that Miles's use of deadly force was justified under the circumstances, bringing the legal chapter of this violent encounter to a close.
