A light rain may have been falling on the evening of Sunday, May 20, 2007, as 24-year-old Nicolas Morena-Pantoja, a Hispanic male, traveled along Chippenham Parkway in Chesterfield, Virginia. For reasons that remain shrouded in mystery, his journey was violently cut short near the Belmont Road exit. It was there that he was shot and killed, his life extinguished in a sudden act of violence that would leave a lasting mark on the community and law enforcement.
In the immediate aftermath, the Chesterfield County Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. The case, however, proved to be challenging from the outset.
