In the winter of 2011, the life of Dave Henry Bailey Jr., a 35-year-old male from Newport News, Virginia, was cut short. On the evening of Thursday, January 13, 2011, what began as a routine traffic stop escalated into a fatal encounter with law enforcement. Officers from the Newport News Police Department pulled Bailey over for two minor traffic infractions: failing to stop appropriately at a traffic signal and having a GPS device mounted on his windshield.
The situation took a tragic
turn when, according to police, Bailey allegedly raised a gun at the officers. In response to this perceived threat, the officers discharged their weapons, fatally wounding him at the scene, near the intersection of 24th Street and Roanoke Avenue. Bailey was pronounced dead, leaving behind a son and a grieving family who remembered him for his smile and great sense of humor.
