In the spring of 2012, a dispute over a stolen car in Hampton, Virginia, tragically ended the life of Aaron Lareco Archer, a 30-year-old Black man. On the evening of April 22nd, Archer was with a friend who was trying to locate his stolen vehicle. Their search led them to the intersection of Pembroke Avenue and Shelton Road, where they spotted the car around 7:15 p.m.
As Archer and his friend approached the vehicle, a confrontation erupted with the two individuals inside. The exchange of words quickly escalated to violence when gunshots were fired. Archer was struck in the upper torso during the altercation. He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the homicide led Hampton Police to identify Chaz Antonio Earp, a 25-year-old resident of Hampton, as the primary suspect. On May 5th, less than two weeks after the fatal shooting, Earp was taken into custody. He faced a series of serious charges, including one count of murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm in public. The stolen car, which had been reported taken from Newport News earlier on the day of the shooting, was recovered by authorities.
