On the evening of June 28, 2012, a vibrant 25-year-old Black / African American man named Tyrone Dennis Jamarr Frink lost his life in Newport News, Virginia. Known for his lively personality, Frink was a resident of the city and an employee at Smithfield Foods. The tragic events unfolded at the intersection of 33rd Street and Madison Avenue, where he was discovered suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to a local hospital, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly revealed that the violence erupted from an argument concerning a woman. In the course of the incident, two other individuals also sustained injuries. The focus of the police investigation soon centered on a 19-year-old named Xan Williams, who was identified as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting.
Just a few days later, on July 1, 2012, authorities located and arrested Williams during a traffic stop in the neighboring city of Hampton. He was subsequently charged with a litany of serious offenses, including first-degree murder, two counts of malicious wounding, and several firearms-related crimes. Additional charges, including gang participation, were also brought against him. While incarcerated and awaiting trial, Williams penned letters that were intercepted by authorities. In these writings, he discussed the case and reportedly showed no remorse for his actions, which were later presented as evidence of his gang involvement.
Despite undergoing a mental evaluation that found him competent to stand trial, and his persistent claims of innocence and denial of being at the crime scene or having any gang affiliations, the evidence presented by the prosecution told a different story. His jury trial was scheduled for February 2015, which ultimately resulted in his conviction for the murder of Tyrone Frink.
