On New Year's Eve in 2013, 21-year-old Donivan K. Walker Jr. was fatally shot at a popular skate park in Hampton, Virginia. The incident, which also resulted in the death of 20-year-old Kenneth J. Wilson, unfolded in the late afternoon at the Woodland Skateboard Park, located at the intersection of Mercury Boulevard and Woodland Road. When police arrived at the scene around 3:57 p.m., they discovered Walker had succumbed to a gunshot wound to his upper torso.
Wilson was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from a dispute over BMX bike parts. The suspect, 16-year-old Jordyn M. Charity, had gotten into an altercation with Walker and Wilson. Following the initial argument, Charity left the skate park, only to return a short time later armed with a shotgun. Witnesses stated that Charity then approached the two men and shot them at close range. After the shooting, he fled the scene on a moped.
Shortly after the incident, at approximately 4:06 p.m., police received a report of a carjacking in the area. The description of the suspect in the carjacking of a Jeep Liberty matched that of the shooter at the skate park. Police located the stolen vehicle and, after a brief pursuit, took Charity into custody without incident at the VA Medical Center around 4:20 p.m.
Jordyn M. Charity was charged with a number of offenses, including first-degree murder, capital murder, grand larceny of a firearm, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, carjacking, evading and eluding, and possession of a firearm by a juvenile. In September 2017, then 20-year-old Charity pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. This plea deal allowed him to avoid a jury trial. During the legal proceedings, it was revealed that Charity had retrieved the shotgun from his stepfather's house before returning to the skate park. In November 2017, a judge sentenced Charity to 168 years in prison for the murders of Donivan Walker Jr. and Kenneth Wilson.
