On a spring evening in 2014, the life of a promising young man, David Emmanuel-Sinclair Copeland, was tragically cut short. The 23-year-old male was fatally shot on May 15, 2014, in the 3300 block of Meadowdale Boulevard in Chesterfield, Virginia. Copeland, a talented basketball player, was home on a break from college in Louisiana at the time of the incident.
In the early hours of that Thursday, shortly after midnight, Copeland had just returned home. He was inside with family and friends when some unusual activity was noticed outside their apartment complex. Copeland and his companions went outside to investigate what was happening. They encountered two individuals, and after a brief conversation, the situation escalated dramatically. The two suspects pulled out firearms and began shooting.
As gunfire erupted, Copeland and his friends scattered, running for cover. In the chaos, Copeland was struck by a bullet. When police responded to reports of shots fired, they found him behind one of the buildings. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into David Copeland's murder remains active, a cold case that Chesterfield County Police and his family are desperate to solve. Authorities have identified two suspects, described by witnesses as Black males in their late teens or early 20s, who fled the scene on foot after the shooting. Despite numerous interviews and a long-term investigation, no arrests have been made, and the individuals responsible for Copeland's death have not been brought to justice. A reward, with a contribution from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, is being offered for any information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for this senseless act of violence.
