In early December of 2014, a promising life was tragically cut short in an Arlington, Virginia apartment. Kristy A. Flowers, a 31-year-old female, was discovered deceased in her residence on North Kensington Street in the Westover neighborhood. Her death, which occurred on Saturday, December 6, 2014, sent shockwaves through her community and left her family searching for answers to a seemingly perfect relationship that ended in violence.
Originally from Lorain, Ohio, Kristy had built a
successful life for herself in the Washington D.C. area over eleven years. She was an ambitious and vibrant woman, working as an intelligence analyst for the government contracting firm Leidos. Alongside her demanding career, she was pursuing a law degree at American University, with aspirations of becoming a defense attorney. Her family and friends described her as a 'diva' who enjoyed the finer things in life, but also as a dedicated and loving individual who cherished her pets and close friendships.
The circumstances of her death pointed to a grim conclusion. After her mother was unable to reach her for a couple of days, she contacted the apartment's maintenance staff, who then alerted the police. Inside the apartment, authorities found Kristy's body along with that of her 29-year-old boyfriend, Ray Savoy. Investigators from the Arlington County Police Department quickly determined the case to be a murder-suicide. They concluded that Savoy had fatally shot Kristy before turning the gun on himself. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
To those who knew them, Kristy and Ray appeared to be a happy and loving couple. Savoy had been described as an attentive and caring boyfriend, even discussing the possibility of marriage with Kristy's family just a month before the tragedy. They had met only a few months prior, in July, and their relationship had progressed quickly. However, in hindsight, some relatives recalled unsettling signs. During a recent trip to visit Kristy's family in Ohio, Savoy had reportedly consumed a significant amount of alcohol and spoke about a gun he kept in his car. Her father also noted what seemed to be jealousy from Savoy when Kristy hugged a male friend. Despite these subtle warnings, there was no history of domestic violence calls to their apartment, and the violent end to their relationship left their families in shock. The investigation did not lead to any other suspects or arrests, as the case was closed with the determination that Ray Savoy was the sole perpetrator.
