In a tragic turn of events on the evening of January 15, 2015, Corey Mattison, a 37-year-old male, was shot and killed in his Ashburn, Virginia, home in what law enforcement described as a domestic-related homicide. The incident unfolded at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the 44200 block of Sonora Lane.
The perpetrator was identified as 38-year-old Minh D. Nguyen, the ex-husband of Mattison's wife, Denise.
Nguyen, a tech entrepreneur who co-founded the social networking service Plaxo, broke into the residence and opened fire on Mattison. At the time of the shooting, two of Denise's children were inside the house but were unharmed. It is believed that Corey Mattison may have been attempting to lead Nguyen away from his family when he was shot. Denise Mattison and another child were returning home as the tragic events were unfolding. Authorities received numerous 911 calls from the residence.
Following the shooting, Nguyen was taken into custody at the scene without incident. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. In the ensuing legal proceedings, Nguyen pleaded no contest to the first-degree murder charge, as well as several other charges including malicious wounding and breaking and entering. Ultimately, Minh Nguyen was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Corey Mattison.
