In the summer of 2015, a heartbreaking incident cut short the life of a young boy in Hampton, Virginia. Four-year-old Chris L. Palmer, Jr., a Black male, died on July 2, 2015, after finding a loaded handgun in his parents' bedroom and accidentally shooting himself. The single gunshot wound proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. At the time of the tragic event, his mother, O'Quasha Jones, and his stepfather, LaShawn Stephenson, were present in the home on West Chamberlin Avenue.
The devastating event unfolded on a Thursday evening, shattering the peace of the neighborhood. Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot and then seeing a man run out of the house holding the bleeding child. Neighbors, deeply affected by the tragedy, created a makeshift memorial of cards and stuffed animals on the family's front porch in the days that followed. A candlelight vigil was also held to honor the memory of the joyful and active young boy, remembered for always playing around the neighborhood.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, the Hampton Police Division launched an investigation. This led to the arrest of Chris's stepfather, 26-year-old LaShawn Stephenson. He was taken into custody and charged with one count of felony child neglect for leaving a loaded firearm accessible to the child. Stephenson was subsequently released on bond.
