In the late summer of 2015, the life of 27-year-old Lawrence J. Johnson was tragically cut short in a burst of violence that unfolded in Petersburg, Virginia. A Black male, Johnson was a father, a boyfriend, and a cherished member of his family and community. On the morning of Tuesday, September 1, 2015, he was outside Shortt's Grocery on Mistletoe Street, a place familiar to many in the neighborhood. It was there, at approximately 11 a.m., that he was shot.
The injuries he sustained were fatal, and he succumbed to them at the scene before emergency medical personnel could render aid.
