On the evening of May 20, 2016, a child custody exchange at a Stafford, Virginia, gas station turned fatal, ending the life of 20-year-old Austen Tyler Agnor of Chester, Maryland. The young man, a husband, father, and U.S. Army serviceman, had driven with his wife to the Exxon on Courthouse Road to drop off his wife's two-year-old daughter for a weekend visit with her biological father.
The meeting was scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
An argument broke out during the exchange between Agnor and the child's father, 27-year-old Corey Andrew Terry of Richmond. In the midst of the dispute, with the child and her mother nearby, Terry shot Agnor multiple times. Emergency services transported Agnor to Stafford Hospital Center, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Law enforcement acted swiftly, and by 9 p.m. that same evening, deputies with the Stafford County Sheriff's Office located and arrested Terry at the intersection of Jefferson Davis Highway and American Legion Road, approximately five miles from the scene of the shooting.
Corey Andrew Terry was charged with first-degree murder and the felony use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Following his arrest, he was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail, facing the legal consequences of the violent encounter that cut short a young man's life during what should have been a routine family matter.
