In the early morning hours of July 2, 2016, a violent chain of events reached its tragic conclusion on the streets of Alexandria, Virginia, with the death of 23-year-old Saquan Hall. The young man was found suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body in the 1000 block of First Street after police responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 3:30 a.m. Hall was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into Hall's death quickly pointed to a motive of revenge. Less than a month prior, on June 8, 2016, Pierre Clark had been shot and killed just a few blocks away. Authorities had been investigating Hall in connection with Clark's murder, and this public scrutiny, his family believes, made him a target. In the wake of his brother's death, Dijuan Clark became convinced that Hall was responsible. This belief appears to have driven him to seek his own form of justice.
In the hours leading up to his death, Saquan Hall had gone to the area of First and North Patrick Streets to meet someone. There, he was confronted by Dijuan Clark, who began shooting at him. Hall attempted to flee, but Clark pursued him, continuing to fire. A bullet struck Hall in the back, causing him to fall to the ground. Clark then stood over the injured Hall and fired again, this time striking him in the head. The brazen nature of the act, with multiple shots fired in a residential area, sent shockwaves through the community.
Following an intensive investigation, Dijuan Clark, then 30 years old, was identified as the suspect in Saquan Hall's murder. He was apprehended in North Carolina on July 21, 2016, and subsequently extradited to Virginia to face charges. The legal proceedings that followed culminated in Clark pleading guilty to second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a murder on March 16, 2017. An eyewitness had come forward, reluctantly testifying to having seen Clark shoot Hall. On July 27, 2017, Dijuan Clark was sentenced to serve 31 years in prison for the killing of Saquan Hall, bringing a somber end to a tragic saga of violence and retribution.
