In the Ensley neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama, a dispute inside a residence on the night of March 18, 2018, turned fatal for 29-year-old Jamaal Grimes. Grimes, a Black male, sustained gunshot wounds during the altercation at a home located at 2501 29th Street Ensley. He was transported to UAB Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and died on March 19, 2018.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of Deion Malik Sanford in May 2018.
Sanford was subsequently charged with the murder of Jamaal Grimes. The case proceeded through the legal system, culminating in a trial where Sanford's defense attorney argued that the shooting was an act of self-defense.
In December 2023, a jury acquitted Deion Malik Sanford of the murder charge, accepting the claim of self-defense. Funeral services for Jamaal Grimes were held on March 31, 2018, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Pratt City, followed by his burial in Zion Memorial Gardens.
