On a tragic Saturday night in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 25-year-old Joseph Demetrice Robinson was cut short in a hail of gunfire. The shooting unfolded on June 5, 2021, at a Circle K gas station near Roebuck Plaza, an event that would also claim the life of his longtime friend, Rikki D'Unri Christopher Bynum, 27, and injure a third man. Robinson, a father of two and the owner of a hauling and towing business, was at the gas station with his friends and his one-year-old son, Joseph Jr.
The violence erupted from what authorities described as an ongoing dispute. Gunshots rang out around 9 p.m., just a short distance from the city's East Precinct. Officers in the vicinity heard the shots and rushed to the scene to find a chaotic and heartbreaking sight. Three men were wounded in the parking lot. Tragically, Robinson and Bynum succumbed to their injuries. Miraculously, Robinson's young son, who was in the car during the shooting, was unharmed and carried to safety by a store clerk.
The suspect, identified as Antonio Shaw, was swiftly captured by police a short distance from the crime scene, aided by witness descriptions. A weapon was also recovered. Surveillance footage from the gas station captured the horrific events, providing crucial evidence for the investigation. At the time of the shooting, Shaw was already out on bond for a previous shooting incident.
Justice for Joseph Robinson and Rikki Bynum came in the form of a jury's verdict and a judge's sentence. Antonio Shaw was convicted on two counts of capital murder, two counts of attempted murder, and a charge of discharging a firearm into a vehicle. Following the jury's recommendation, a Jefferson County Circuit Judge sentenced Shaw to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would not be able to harm anyone else in the community. The swift arrest, trial, and conviction brought a measure of closure to the grieving families, though the pain of their loss remains.
