On June 22, 2018, at approximately 10 p.m., Birmingham Police responded to reports of gunfire in an alley behind the 1700 block of 28th Street Southwest. Upon arrival, officers discovered 22-year-old Decorian Taylor lying deceased in the alley, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Taylor resided nearby, and preliminary investigations suggested he may have been attempting to flee when he was fatally shot.
