On the evening of December 14th, he was discovered outside a home on Eureka Drive, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Boatwright succumbed to his injuries. This violent act was not an isolated incident but rather part of a troubling wave of violence in the area at the time.
The investigation into Boatwright's death moved swiftly, and
authorities quickly identified two teenage suspects. Eighteen-year-old James E. Williams Jr. and 19-year-old Davion P. Alexander were soon taken into custody. Williams was apprehended on the same day as the shooting, while Alexander was captured the following day by the U.S. Marshals Service. Both young men faced serious charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Following their arrests, they were held without bond.
Further investigation revealed a potential link to local gang activity. Reports suggested that Boatwright may have been associated with a gang known as the Lake View Crew. The events leading to the arrests were dramatic, involving a police pursuit of a silver Honda SUV connected to multiple shootings. Born on February 14, 1981, Basheed Boatwright was a graduate of Richmond Public Schools and had earned his General Education Diploma along with several other certifications. He had a passion for cooking and had worked as a cook at various establishments, most recently at the District 5 restaurant. In his youth, he was an avid football and basketball player at the Boys and Girls Club. He was known for his generous and kind-hearted nature and for always wearing a smile.
